New research indicates that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
