The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
