European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
